Kidney disease is a major public health issue. 1 in 3 American adults is at risk for kidney disease. 1 in 9 American adults has kidney disease and most don’t know it. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of either of these diseases, you could be at risk for developing chronic kidney disease. Other risk factors include a family history of kidney disease and being over the age of 60. Two simple tests can help determine kidney disease: a blood test that measures your GFR and a urine test that measures your ACR. Ask your primary care physician or nurse practitioner about these tests.
